About Project

Modern trends in the development of distribution networks are increasingly oriented towards integrating renewable energy sources (RES) on the consumer side or in their immediate proximity. However, it has been demonstrated that fluctuations in power generation from renewable energy sources (RES), when integrated into so-called active distribution networks, can lead to voltage instability and various operational challenges. Moreover, shifts in consumption patterns, particularly the growing use of heat pumps and air conditioning systems, significantly increase reactive power demand, further deteriorating voltage profiles in the network. Therefore, the integration of advanced technologies enabling efficient voltage control is of paramount importance for the synthesis of next-generation active distribution networks. This project will investigate the potential of applying artificial intelligence (AI) for the optimal management of various compensation devices aimed at voltage regulation in active distribution networks, through the development of an AI-based controller. The proposed controller will enable precise monitoring and analysis of key network parameters to optimize reactive power measurement and regulation. The ultimate goal of the project is to contribute to the development of the first voltage-balanced active distribution network in Montenegro.

The project will be implemented in a period of 12 months, and the expected project results will include the following:

  • Modeling Real Distribution Networks Using Actual Data,
  • Simulation of different operating modes of the distribution network,
  • Development and training of AI controllers for managing compensation devices,
  • Evaluation of the AI controller’s performance in the simulation environment.
